What is Hairfall?
Hairfall (excessive shedding, thinning, or localized loss) can be due to genetics, hormonal imbalance, nutritional deficiencies, stress, scalp infections, medication, or systemic disease. Ayurveda recognises multiple patterns (Rookshya, Kshaya, Pitta/Vata dominance, Dhatukshaya) — therefore treatment is personalised.
Common symptoms & signs
- Diffuse thinning, increased shedding (>100 hairs/day), receding hairline, or patchy bald patches (alopecia areata patterns).
- Scalp signs: dryness, itching, dandruff, seborrhea, premature greying or oily scalp.
- Associated features: brittle nails, fatigue, hormonal symptoms (in women), or recent illness/fever/medication.
Ayurvedic view (brief)
Hair (Kesh) is nourished by Rasa and Rakta dhatus. Hairfall arises from Dhatu kshaya (weak nourishment), Pitta/ Vata imbalances, excess heat or toxins (Ama) blocking nourishment. Treatment goals: correct Agni, pacify Pitta/Vata, remove Ama, nourish dhatus and restore scalp health.
Important Note
Rule out treatable medical causes (thyroid dysfunction, anemia, androgenic alopecia, infections, medication effects). Ayurveda provides complementary, evidence-informed supportive care — choose therapies after proper assessment and medical coordination when required.
Ayurvedic Strategy for Hairfall
- Assessment: Determine pattern (Pitta-driven burning shedding, Vata dry hairfall, Dhatukshaya/nutritional) and rule out systemic causes.
- Local therapies: Scalp nourishment and cleansing (Abhyanga with medicated oils, Lepam pastes, Oil baths) to improve circulation and follicle health.
- Systemic therapies: Nasya (if indicated), selected Basti or rejuvenation treatments to improve dhatu nourishment and correct gut-skin-hair axis.
- Herbs & supplements: Bhringraj, Amla, Brahmi, Fenugreek, Neem — used as oils, pastes or oral formulations based on safety and diagnosis.
- Lifestyle & diet: Adequate protein, iron and micronutrients, stress management, sleep, avoid excessive heat/styling and harsh chemicals.
Therapies Useful for Hairfall — with reference images
Only therapies commonly used for hairfall are listed below. Each item includes a clinic reference photo. Therapies are individualized and performed by trained practitioners.
Abhyanga (Oil Massage) Key
What it is: Warm, medicated oil massage over scalp and body. For hairfall we emphasise gentle scalp Abhyanga with hair-strengthening oils.
- Improves scalp circulation, calms Pitta/Vata, reduces breakage and encourages follicular nourishment.
- Common oils: Bhringraj oil, Amla-based oils, sesame or coconut medicated with herbal extracts.
- Frequency: 2–3 times/week for active hairfall; daily scalp self-massage is encouraged for maintenance.
Lepam (Herbal Scalp Pastes)
What it is: Topical application of freshly prepared herbal pastes (e.g., bhringraj, amla, neem, methi) on the scalp.
- Reduces local inflammation, controls dandruff, soothes scalp and directly nourishes follicles.
- Prepared per individual needs — cooling pastes for Pitta, nourishing mixtures for Dhatu depletion.
- Applied weekly/fortnightly in clinic as intensive therapy.
Oil Bath (Snehana & Steam)
What it is: Warm oil application followed by gentle steam or warm compress — helps oil penetration and opens follicles.
- Enhances efficacy of oils and lepas, improves scalp hydration and reduces dryness-induced breakage.
- Often used as a preparatory step before Kashaya Dhara or post-Abhyanga.
Shirodhara (Stress & Nervous System Support)
What it is: Warm, continuous flow of medicated oil on the forehead to calm the nervous system.
- Useful when hairfall has a strong stress/Pitta component (telogen effluvium). Improves sleep, reduces cortisol-related shedding.
- Adjunctive therapy — supports systemic balance alongside topical scalp treatments.
Nasyam (Nasal Administration)
What it is: Administration of mild, nourishing herbal oils/powders through the nose to influence head and scalp circulation.
- Helps improve scalp nourishment, senses (Indriya) and digestion-related causes of hairfall; selected in patients with cranial symptoms or early greying.
- Performed only by trained practitioners with appropriate formulations.
Basti (Selected — Systemic Rejuvenation)
What it is: Medicated enemas (oil or decoction) used to correct Vata and improve systemic nourishment in chronic hair loss patterns.
- Used in chronic Dhatukshaya or Vata-dominant hairfall as part of an integrated rejuvenation protocol.
- Prescribed selectively after full assessment.
Herbs, Oils & Topical Support
Topical and oral herbs are chosen based on individual patterns and safety. Below are commonly used options in Ayurvedic haircare.
- Bhringraj (Eclipta alba): Traditional hair tonic — used in oils and pastes to strengthen follicles and encourage regrowth.
- Amla (Emblica officinalis): Rich in vitamin C and antioxidants; used in oil or powder for strengthening and preventing premature greying.
- Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Calms the nervous system and used in formulations for scalp health.
- Fenugreek (Methi): Anti-inflammatory, reduces dandruff and may improve hair thickness when used topically.
- Oils: Bhringraj oil, Amla oil, coconut or sesame medicated with herbs — used for nightly scalp massage.
- Oral nutrition: Ensure protein, iron, vitamin D, B12 and zinc; correct deficiencies with medical tests and supplements when needed.
- Avoid: Excessive heat-styling, harsh chemical treatments, and prolonged stress without management.
Herbs and oils should be prescribed carefully if you have allergies, scalp infections or are on systemic medications. Always inform your clinician about existing medical issues.
