What is Fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a chronic condition characterized by widespread musculoskeletal pain, fatigue, non-restorative sleep, cognitive difficulties ("fibro fog") and heightened pain sensitivity. It is considered a disorder of pain processing and autonomic/central nervous system sensitization rather than a structural joint disease.
Common symptoms
- Widespread aching and tender points
- Chronic fatigue and low energy
- Poor sleep (non-restorative), morning stiffness
- Cognitive problems (concentration, memory)
- Heightened sensitivity to touch, light, sound
Ayurvedic perspective
Ayurveda typically views fibromyalgia as a Vata predominance (nerve/movement disorder) with accumulation of Ama (toxins) and disturbance of the nervous (Majja) and muscular (Mamsa) tissues. Treatment aims to calm the nervous system, remove Ama, nourish tissues and restore sleep & digestion.
Ayurvedic Strategy for Fibromyalgia
Our clinic follows a multi-modal, individualized strategy focused on symptom relief, nervous system stabilization and long-term resilience:
- Shamana & supportive therapies: Gentle oil-based therapies (Abhyanga, Njavara Kizhi) and cooling/pacifying treatments that soothe Vata and calm the nervous system.
- Stress & sleep regulation: Shirodhara, Nasyam, and relaxation practices to improve sleep and reduce sympathetic overdrive.
- Detox & removal of Ama: Mild Swedana (steam), Lepam and targeted Panchakarma elements (carefully selected) to reduce systemic toxins that worsen symptoms.
- Herbal & nutritional support: Adaptogenic and nervine herbs (Ashwagandha, Brahmi), mitochondrial support and diet to rebuild tissues and energy.
- Rehabilitation: Graded physiotherapy, gentle yoga, breathing (pranayama) and cognitive support to restore function.
In-Clinic Therapies Useful for Fibromyalgia (with photos)
Therapies below are selected for symptom relief in fibromyalgia: they focus on calming the nervous system, easing myofascial pain, improving sleep and restoring energy. Images are included for reference.
Abhyanga FM
What it is: Warm, rhythmic full-body herbal oil massage tailored to pacify Vata and relax the nervous system.
- Deeply relaxes muscles, reduces pain sensitivity and improves sleep quality.
- Stimulates lymphatic drainage and improves circulation to muscles and nerves.
- Best used daily during an intensive phase, then 1–3× weekly for maintenance.
- Contraindications: active infection, open wounds—modify accordingly.
Herbs, Nutritional & Supportive Medicine
We emphasize calming, adaptogenic and nervine herbs that support nervous system resilience, sleep and pain modulation. Prescriptions are individualized.
- Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera): Adaptogen; reduces fatigue and improves sleep & resilience.
- Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri): Cognitive support and nervine calming (helps "fibro fog").
- Shatavari: Nourishing rasayana helpful for fatigue and hormonal balance.
- Dashmoola / Mamsa-support formulations: Vata-pacifying formulations to reduce pain and restore muscle strength.
- Magnesium & supportive nutrients (protocols): Where indicated, adjunctive magnesium, B-vitamins and dietary support (coordinate with medical provider).
- Topical medicated oils: Warm herbal oils applied at home for daily symptom relief (as advised).
Herbal combinations are chosen after assessment. We coordinate with any existing medications (antidepressants, neuropathic pain meds) to avoid interactions.
Lifestyle, Sleep & Rehabilitation
Non-pharmacologic measures are central to long-term improvement in fibromyalgia.
- Sleep hygiene: Regular schedule, avoid screens before bed, calming evening routine (warm oil massage or Shirodhara where appropriate).
- Graded exercise: Gentle, low-impact aerobic activity and progressive strengthening tailored by physiotherapist (start very low and increase slowly).
- Breathing & relaxation: Daily pranayama, meditation and guided relaxation to lower sympathetic overactivity.
- Psychological support: CBT, mindfulness or counseling when anxiety/depression coexists — we coordinate referrals as needed.
Sample Treatment Plans & Timelines
All plans are individualized — these are commonly used frameworks we adapt per patient.

Safety, Expectations & Integration
- Fibromyalgia is a multifactorial condition—Ayurvedic care aims at symptom control and improved quality of life; complete "cure" is not guaranteed and depends on numerous factors.
- We coordinate with any existing medical treatments (antidepressants, neuromodulators, pain meds) to ensure safety and avoid interactions.
- Certain procedures (Basti, heavy detox) are used selectively; many therapies are gentle and tailored for tolerance.
- Patients with uncontrolled medical illness, active infections, or severe autonomic dysfunction undergo medical clearance before intensive procedures.
