What is Neck Pain?

Neck pain can come from muscle strain, poor posture, degenerative disc/joint changes (cervical spondylosis), nerve irritation, or inflammation. Symptoms include localized pain, stiffness, restricted range of motion, headaches, and sometimes radiation of pain to shoulders and arms.

Common causes

  • Poor posture or prolonged screen/desk use
  • Muscle strain or tension
  • Cervical spondylosis, disc degeneration or bulge
  • Stress-related muscle tightness and referred pain

Ayurvedic view

Neck pain is often seen as a Vata imbalance (stiffness, reduced lubrication) with local ama (toxins) and Kapha or Pitta involvement depending on swelling or heat. Ayurveda emphasises local lubrication, detoxification, muscle relaxation and posture correction.

Ayurvedic Strategy for Neck Pain

Our clinic focuses on rapid symptomatic relief and long-term correction using:

  • Local therapies to relax muscles, improve circulation and reduce inflammation (Greeva Vasti, Nadi Swedan, Lepam).
  • Whole-body therapies to reduce Vata and nourish tissues (Abhyanga, Oil Bath).
  • Targeted procedures to relieve nerve irritation and spinal tension (Kati/Prishtha Vasti where relevant).
  • Posture correction, ergonomic advice, and physiotherapy-guided exercises to prevent recurrence.

Clinic Therapies — Useful for Neck Pain (photos included)

The following therapies are the primary in-clinic treatments we use for cervical pain, stiffness, radicular symptoms and related problems. Images are included for quick reference.

Greeva Vasti - cervical oil retention

Greeva Vasti

What it is: A dough ring is placed around the neck and warm medicated oil is retained for a set time to nourish cervical joints and muscles.

  • Deeply nourishes and lubricates cervical joints and periarticular tissues.
  • Reduces stiffness, improves neck mobility and eases nerve irritation.
  • Beneficial in cervical spondylosis, chronic neck strain and nerve-related symptoms.
  • Typical course: 6–12 sessions depending on severity and response.

Herbal & Supportive Medicines

We combine topical and oral herbal medicines tailored to patient needs — examples commonly used for neck pain:

  • Dashmoola formulations — Vata-balancing, anti-inflammatory for musculoskeletal pain.
  • Guggulu preparations — reduces inflammation and supports joint function.
  • Ashwagandha — adaptogen to reduce stress and muscle fatigue.
  • Topical medicated oils — applied after Abhyanga and steam to penetrate tissues.
  • Herbal decoctions — for Kashaya Dhara and supportive internal therapy.

All internal medicines are prescribed after an Ayurvedic consult. If neurological signs (weakness, numbness, bowel/bladder changes) are present, immediate medical evaluation is essential.

Posture, Exercises & Rehabilitation

Therapies are combined with an active rehabilitation plan to prevent recurrence and restore function.

  • Posture correction: Ergonomic advice for desk/sleep posture, screen height and regular micro-breaks.
  • Stretching & strengthening: Gentle cervical range-of-motion, scapular stabilizers, isometric neck exercises guided by physiotherapist.
  • Breathing & relaxation: Pranayama and relaxation techniques to reduce muscular tension.
  • Home care: Warm compresses, gentle topical oils and short walks — avoid heavy lifting and sudden neck movements early in recovery.

Sample Clinic Plans

Acute Relief (3–7 days)
  • Localized Nadi Swedan + Abhyanga
  • Topical Lepam and gentle potli therapy
  • Short course of anti-inflammatory herbs & posture advice
Stabilize & Rehabilitate (2–4 weeks)
  • Greeva Vasti course (6–12 sessions) + Njavara/Churn potli where indicated
  • Shirodhara for stress reduction and improved sleep
  • Physio-guided strengthening & ergonomic program
Maintenance

Safety & When to See a Doctor

  • If you experience radiating arm weakness, numbness, balance problems, or bowel/bladder changes — seek immediate medical attention.
  • Panchakarma and Vasti procedures are done only after clinical assessment; some conditions (infections, uncontrolled systemic disease) may be contra-indications.
  • We coordinate with physiotherapists and, when required, orthopedists / neurologists for integrated care.
